In this video, Master Plumber Bryan Graham talks about water saving toilets and how well they work.
[Bryan] Referring to water saving toilets, when they changed over to, to 1.6 gallon flush, uh, commode, you know, all the old plumbers will say, ‘Don’t get rid of your commode. As long as you have that five gallon commode, don’t get rid of your commode.’
Nowadays some of the newer water saving toilets, the better ones, the Kohlers and, and some of the American Standard toilets, they have the bigger flapper, which is the actual valve that lets the water go from the tank to the bowl. So it’s still flushing that lower volume of water but it’s flushing it a lot faster.
So it’s dropping, instead of dropping five gallons really slow, it’s dropping that 1.6 gallons really fast. And so as the toilets have progressed, you know, as, as the technology’s progressed, and, and they’ve gotten a lot better, the flush has gotten a lot better than when they first switched over to 1.6, all the toilets were clogging up. Nobody wanted to buy ’em. So now that technology is better.
