This is a summary of Bryan’s video:
So, a lot of people call us about flushing the water heater out every year. The right way to flush a water heater is to hook up a water hose to the valve on the bottom of the water heater. Leave your water on. Leave the cold water and hot water connected. Don’t disconnect anything. You can leave the gas on if you want or you can cut it off, and re-light it afterwards.
Just open the valve at the bottom, let all the trash, and debris, and everything blow out of the bottom of the tank, while you still have the pressure on to the water heater. You don’t actually have to drain the water heater all the way down to empty. Some people wanna do that, and that’s fine, I guess that works too.
If you do want to drain the water heater, then you need to be sure that you have the gas turned off, you have the electrical turned off, because if you drain it down, and you have the power on too, you’ll blow the element, or you can blow the control valve on the gas heater.
